Bougainville

In April 2010 Bob got back to the northern area of Bougainville some 23 years (after living in Arawa in the south of Island for the 5 years before that). It was a bittersweet moment as in the intervening years Bougainville has been through a full scale war and a fragile peace process. They have lost a full generation of their educated young people

Our last site was on the Ramazon river in the north of Bougainville. Access these days is by flying into Buka Island and then travelling across the narrow Buka channel to Bougainville. Below, main street Buka and the Buka market
