The Giraffes of Koure

 

The Giraffe herd centered around Koure about one hour east of Naimey is the last in West Africa. According to the Lonely Planet Guide it had shrank to 50 in in 1996 but has grown to 150. In the 1990's the President decided to make gifts of the Giraffes to other foreign leaders and sent the army in to capture them. This resulted in a dozen or so being shot. In the area we visited we came across two herds. There is no other wildlife to speak of (although to the south of Naimey the W National Park has a full suite of African wildlife).

The area where the Giraffes live is shared with people as with these locals below. I thought the tree looked quite weird. Mark Noome and Dave Slater from Apollo projects were my companions for the trip into the bush
