The Louvre

The Treasures of the Louvre are truely overwhelming and it would take a full week to do the collections even partial justice. I found the greek and Italian  sculptures a real feature.
The Nike of Samothrace (above) was discovered in 1863, but was estimated to have been created around 190 BC. A partial inscription on the base of the statue includes the word "Rhodhios" (Rhodes), indicating that the statue was commissioned to celebrate a naval victory by Rhodes, at that time the most powerful maritime state in the Aegean.
Venus de Milo, is an ancient Greek statue and one of the most famous works of ancient Greek sculpture. Created at some time between 130 and 100 BC, it is believed to depict Aphrodite (Venus to the Romans) the Greek goddess of love and beauty.

Of course we could not forget the most famous lady in the Louvre. No chance to check on secret inscriptions as she is well secured behind glass
