Muir Woods is the only old-growth coastal redwood forest in the San Francisco Bay Area and one of the last on the planet. It is a short drive north over the Golden Gate Bridge. The tallest Coastal Redwood in the park is 258 feet (90 metres) high and up to 1200 years old. Horse Tail "ferns" are common on the understory and animals observerved included the Whitetail Deer and Pileated Woodpeckers.
