O'ahu

After arriving at 2 o'clock in the morning  from Auckland on the morning of the day we left in the afternoon (it's all very confusing), we woke to this view across Waikiki beach from our Halekulani  hotel window  (above). The evening sunset is equally spectacular.

On the way back we stayed at the Waikiki Parc hotel across the road

Our arrival coincided with the local King Kamehameha festival. They sure do love parade
A local Japanese cultural festival was held at the same time.

Evenings watching the sun go down on the "Room without walls" at the Halekulani hotel  were very pleasant

The large hotels crowd right onto the beach and the catamarans load from the sand
We took a tour around the island. This is Hanauma bay on the south east of the island. Visitor numbers are so high that they restrict the number of visitors that can be on the the beach and the number buses that arrive at the lookout above.

Byodo In Temple.
Hawaiian green turtles near Waimea bay on the north coast.

Below; the famous Sunset Beach. This is the home of the monster surf, however on the day we visited it was pretty flat.

The visit to  the Arizona memorial was a sobering experience. The ship continues to bleed oil 64 years after she was sunk
The mighty Missouri is moored nearby. This was the last battleship to see service (in the first Gulf War).
