Papua New Guinea

Our involvement in Papua New Guinea is separated by 23 years. We lived in Bougainville from 1982 to 1987, then Bob has been involved in a ADB (Asian Development Bank) project in 2010 looking at hydropower sites in the provincial areas of the country.
Our Team in 2010. Vani Igo (GHD person in Moresby) Bob McKelvey, Brendan Hegerty (Team Leader also a Kiwi) Lulu Zuniga-Carmine (our social development person) Rosie (our secretary), Mike Mcrae-Williams (biofuels) and Sev Maso (Hydropower specialist) Home sweet home in Port Moresby, razor wire fences, permanent security guards and bars on all the windows. We had two units side by side which doubled as accomodation and office

The second visit to Papua New Guinea was for the Highlands Highway Project. This involved an inspection of some 600km of the Highlands Highway from Lae in Morobe Province all the way to Mendi in the Southern Highlands province. The second part of the assignment involved exploring options for alternative routes around sections of the Highland Highway subject to frequent blockages. The Highlands Highway is an essential artery for Papua New Guinea, linking the most populated provinces in the Highlands to Lae and Madang on the coast.

The team at the end of the road at Mendi in the Southern Highlands. We had a strong security presence with an armed police unit from Kundiawa and additional security guards. The Highlands can be a dangerous place without these precautions Part of the problem. A truck blocking the road just west of Kundiawa in the Simbu province. This is one of the worse sections of the road. Note the human "tug of war team" pulling the truck back onto the road
