Port Douglas

In late July early August we holidayed in Port Douglas north of Cairns in Queensland. The area is notable for the tropical rainforests centred on the Daintree, Cape tribulation area. The forests enjoy world heritage status. These are a few of the photographs we took on our trips around the region.

The Daintree river mouth. The area north
of the river a present has a moratorium on
future development. This is causing some
considerable controversy, particularly those
that have purchased properties in the area
but are not allowed to build on their land
Ferry across the Daintree river. The ferry operates on a cable and winch system.

There is some pressure for the construction of a bridge but this is being resisted by conservationists & others who feel that a bridge will create too much pressure on the area for development

The middle reaches of the Daintree estuary is famous for its considerable natural beauty and the crocodiles which inhabit the area. On our trip on the river we saw four two of which are featured here
Amethystine Pythons also are present. This one was curled up on the branches beside the river warming itself in the sun. They grow to four or metres in length

Other animals sighted included the Lace Monitor , Turtles and Flying Foxes.
The Mossman Gorge is another area worth visiting. There are numerous walks in the area
These horses seemed to be right at home grazing in the shallows of Lake Mitchell in the Atherton Tablelands north of Mareeba
We visited the Mareeba Tropical Savannah and Wetland reserve. This swamp hen seemed to be more interested in attacking my shoe .

Near Yungaburra on the Atherton Tableland we visited the Curtain Fig tree (right) and Lake Barrine a volcanic crater lake, where a swallow obligingly posed for Janet (left) and we saw Kauri trees very similar to our New Zealand versions
Of course when in Cairns it is almost mandatory to go on the Karunda rail trip one way and the Skyrail (gondola) the other.
Port Douglas is a very pleasant place to stay. When not tripping around we spent our time lazing around the Radisson tree top resort. Our room was comfortable and we were only a short walk from the beach. The morning sunrises were quite spectacular
On our Final day we visited the outer reef on the Quicksilver catamaran. The Photos below were taken on the trip
