| Rabaul is currently dominated by the active
Volcano, Tavurvur which has been erupting since 1994 literally on
the doorstep of the city. Most administrative functions have been
shifted down to Kokopo further down the coast from Rabaul, but the
population is hanging in there. While the government sees the move to
Kokopo as permanent, it will be interesting to see if the population
moves back into Rabaul after the volcano stops erupting as they did
after the previous episodes in the 1930's-1940's. |

| On the eastern end of the town everything is slowly
dissapearing under metres of ash such as the derelict Travelodge hotel
above. The volcanoes here and elsewhere in PNG are monitored in the
Rabaul Volcano observatory which is located on observatory hill overlooking the town |
