The ascent up from Skagway is through rain forest with spruces and othe conifers. As the White Pass (at close to 1000 metres altitude) is approached the vegetation becomes sparse giving way finally to expanses of rock with scattered stunted trees |

| The descent from the pass into the Yukon follows Lake Tagish then Lake Bennet into the town of Carcross. A surpise is small area of desert (formed from former lake sediments) on the outskirts of Carcross | |
